New Nike World Cup Ad

Friday, May 21st, 2010

This commercial is ridiculous, as is the standard for Nike’s World Cup promos (just go to youtube and search through all their old ads to see what I mean). Not only is it brilliantly shot and showcases the game’s greatest stars, but it blends pop culture references, music and the hopes and dreams of every nation into a three-minute window of a possible future. It’s pretty rad…

Sweet Nike Commercial – The Secret of the Air

Pretty good new ad campaign from your friends at Nike. The part with Sharipova is especially good – wish they had left the grunt in.

I Miss North Carolina

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

A fantastic commercial from a furniture store in High Point, NC. Thanks to Nick F. for sending this clip along to me.

Quick tangent – This got me thinking about weird commercials and there used to be a long running commercial for Harrelson Ford Mazda that ran in Charlotte for like 15 years. It had a bunch of people at a bar drinking beer and it featured such local celebrities as Bill Elliott (NASCAR driver), Jim “Catfish” Hunter (baseball player), and Drew Pearson (football player). The crowd gathered behind the guys basically argued over what Harrelson Ford Mazda did better…their low financing or their low prices. Then one of the celebrities said, “Harrelson Ford Mazda, they don’t just beat the competition, they Crush ‘em!” And Bill Elliott crushed a beer can that he was holding. Then “Catfish” Hunter said in a thick southern accent, “That’s awesome Bill!” Let’s just say that it was the best commercial ever and I’m sad that it’s nowhere to be found online. I mean, for god sakes, Bill Elliott crushed a beer can on a TV ad and someone said what we were all thinking…”awesome” indeed Bill Elliott.

Enzyte Commercial

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

I’ve seen this commercial about a thousand times and I still can’t believe they get away with running this thing on TV. Let me get this straight, our hero Bob, has low self esteem about his situation downstairs. So, he decides to start taking a little Enzyte, you know, for a little confidence booster. And guess what? It works. The female employees at the company Christmas party get worked up into such a frenzy, that they begin to actually line up so they can sit in his lap as he’s dressed up as Santa Claus. You read that right. Professional women in the workplace, are so enamored with Bob’s recent growth spurt, that they line up to sit on his lap in order to give it a test drive. I’m sure this kind of stuff happens in your workplace on a daily basis.

Needless to say, I love this commercial. It cracks me up every time. Thank you Enzyte. And most importantly, thank you Bob.

Super Bowl Commercials

superbowl2

So the Super Bowl is fast approaching and most importantly, we are getting a new batch of Super Bowl commercials. It’s probably going to be the most exciting thing going this Sunday since the match-up between the Cardinals and Steelers isn’t all that enticing.

I must say that the last few years of Super Bowl commercials have really been disappointing. Sure, there are a few that were good but most of them have been craptastic. So, I came up with some ingredients as to what makes a good commercial.

1. Old People. Old people are always funny. You put an old person on TV and I’m pretty much sold. If old people try to act young in the commercial, you can pretty much guarantee a hit commercial…just have these old farts throw down some hip slang terms and the laughs will come. I promise. For good measure, I’ve added an example.

2. Fatties – That’s right, if you want your commercial to be a successful one, it always helps when you cast some portly people, and 99% of the time, some portly men. For some reason, fatties have a great feel for comedic timing, I’m not sure why that is…but at the same time, they bring a trusting and comforting quality to the table. I was going to add another commercial from Nate Torrence (from an earlier post) but that would be too easy. So, I’ve added some portly football players who are just as funny.

3. Kids – now this is tricky, because sometimes, if you add kids into the commercials, it turns out really lame because they try to be too cute and it turns into some sort of Hallmark commercial. But, if you have kids acting like adults, well then, you have something. And if these kids just so happened to be a little on the chunky side, well then, you have hit gold, pure comedic gold.

4. Violence – Who knew violence could be so damn funny in commercials? If it’s a kick in the nards, or an old lady tackling a young man, or well, Terry Tate taking down some folks, it’s always pretty entertaining.

What’s not funny? Animals. With monkeys usually being the exception to the rule. Those damn Budweiser commercials with the horses kicking footballs? Just awful. Awful. Horse farting? Dumb. Dancing geckos with Naomi Campbell? Uh, I’m still not sure what the hell that was all about. Anyway, let’s hope this year’s Super Bowl commercials has a lot of old people, fat kids acting like adults, some violence and of course some fatties.

One more…sorry, I had to add this one because it’s awesome. I didn’t realize you could bleep out swear words in commercials.
