My Kid Could Paint That

I just saw this documentary called My Kid Could Paint That, which basically tells a story of a 4 year-old girl from the New York area who becomes a huge sensation in the modern art world for her paintings. At the height of her popularity, her paintings were being sold for over 25 thousand dollars. Which of course is a lot of money and it is especially a lot of money for a 4 year-old kid. But of course this wouldn’t be a story without some controversy…and it’s not so much the question of what is Art. It’s more the question of did this 4 year-old girl actually paint these pieces of art. Did her parents help her at all? The documentary touches on a 60 Minutes story that they did on the 4 year-old prodigy that pokes a ton of holes into this family’s story. 60 Minutes puts a hidden camera in the house to capture how this 4-year old girl paints and well, what do you know, it seems as if the artwork that is produced doesn’t live up to her prior work. It’s a compelling story and an interesting look on how this young girl, who comes off as a normal child, is exploited because of her “gift.” One really walks away from this film feeling sorry for the girl and her little brother who seems almost like an afterthought in the eyes of her parents. So go check it out, it’s worth a rent.
