I think of a movie. You guess it in the comments section. If nobody guesses correctly, I’ll update the post with a clue. As always, the picture above is a clue.
Good luck and Guess the Movie!
UPDATE: Congratulations James, you are the winner of this week’s Guess the Movie! Cold Mountain was the correct answer. You see, what I did was I put a picture of a mountain with snow on it. Pretty clever, right? Enough about me, the big winner is James. So way to be James! A big thanks to everyone for playing this week.
Out of 42 people, I’m dead last in my office pool. DEAD LAST. I’m afraid to look at the other pool that I’m in but I have been informed that I’m not doing well in that either. My lady, on the other hand, who is in my office pool, is currently in fourth place and has a really good shot at winning the whole thing which would earn her about 650 bones. That’s right, she doesn’t watch basketball and I do, but she’s two games from winning that kind of money. Unbelievable. There is no justice in the world.
- Sacha Baron Cohen’s upcoming comedy Bruno has received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA. Apparently the ratings board didn’t like a few of the sexual scenes. Despite the rating, I believe this movie will still do pretty well, but probably not as well as his Borat movie did…just because the younger kids won’t be able to see the movie.
- Remember that youtube clip with Christian the lion and the two wild and crazy Austin Powers type guys? If you don’t, then click here (sorry about the music on this clip). Anyway, Animal Planet is running a special this Sunday at 8pm est called The True Story of the Internet Lion which will expand on the youtube story about the two guys that adopted Christian the lion.
- ESPN FIlms is doing something called 30 for 30 which involves thirty hourlong sports documentaries that ties into ESPN’s 30th anniversary. Has someone from ESPN been reading my Musings? Um, probably not. But I mentioned something last month about ESPN needing to do some documentaries and they are now going to deliver. Some stories – Muhammad and Larry, which will look at the 1980 fight between Ali and Larry Holmes. King of the New York Streets which centers around Reggie Miller’s 1995 playoff showdown with the NY Knicks. And finally, The Greatest Tennis Match Ever, the story of Peter, a 15 year-old trash talking tennis prodigy who challenged his much older, maligned, and tennis-challenged brother, Rhett Nichols, to a tennis duel to crown the best tennis player in South Charlotte. Rhett, as we all remember, completely dominated the match from start to finish, leaving a decimated, sobbing Peter to drown his sorrows in his mother’s arms. I can’t wait to see that on the small screen.
- The HBO show Hung will be premiering this summer. Oh, and all of you True Blood fans will have to wait till this summer for the new season.
I’m sure you’ve seen this trailer by now but if you haven’t, take a gander. Spike Jonze directs this classic children’s book and it looks like he may have turned the book into a pretty cool little movie. Let’s hope the movie lives up to the trailer.
Have you seen Toddlers and Tiaras on TLC? It’s actually one of the few shows on TLC that doesn’t revolve around having an insanely huge family (17 and Counting, Jon and Kate + 8, and Table for 12). Anyway, Toddlers and Tiaras covers the cut-throat world of beauty pageants for little tikes. If you’ve seen one episode, you’ve pretty much seen them all. It’s actually kind of frightening to watch as you see some of these parents push their 3 year-old kid into wearing gaudy make-up and “flippers,” (that’s fake teeth for the layperson) just so they can live out their own fantasies through their offspring. My favorite was when they had a little boy on the show that retired from his pageant career at the ripe old age of six. That’s right. He knew that it was time to move onto a new career. And that was awesome. I’m thinking of taking a final bow from the blog world soon…I need to move onto bigger and better things like, a career in the pageant circuit. I would own the 30 year-old age group.
- Never once did I want to see a Three Stooges movie. Sean Penn feels differently from me though.
- HBO’s new series, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency got a pretty good review from variety. Not the best title that I’ve ever heard but I think I’ll check it out.
- This documentary is like the real life version of Spinal Tap. Click here to check out this funny, sad, and pretty emotional trailer out for Anvil! The Story of Anvil.
- Don’t like learning about history? What if Michael Cera made a video for you about some historical moments? Would that change things?
Today on the spotlight: Long Island’s finest all female rap group. Pay attention CC, these ladies are repping strong island and coming correct. Julie (Hesta Prynn, that’s right – her moniker stems from the literary classic The Scarlet Letter), Correne (Spero) and Robyn (Sprout) form the estrogen-fueled hip-hop triumvirate that revels in its own gritty, back-to-basics approach. I was trying to see how many hyphenated phrases I could put in one sentence. Seriously though – sexually charged lyrics and a free-wheeling disregard for maintaining proper lady-like behavior have made the music world stand up and take notice. An injection of fun into the typically contrived rap genre is always good, and many big names agree as Northen State has toured with The Roots, Talib Kweli, De La Soul and Gym Class Heroes. Not new to the scene but mabe new to you – check it out…
I think of a movie. You try to guess it in the comments section. As always, the picture above is a clue. If nobody guesses correctly, I will update the post with another clue and everyone can guess again. Good luck.
UPDATE: No correct guesses yet. Here is another clue. In the biz, we call this integration…and it was done in a funny way in this movie.
UPDATE: James, You Guessed the Movie! The correct answer was Wayne’s World. Remember the scene when Wayne and Garth are talking about not selling out? And then they are decked out in their Reeboks, eating Pizza Hut pizza, and taking a Nuprin? That scene was awesome. Sorry Don Poppa Cheechio…you were a little too late with the answer. So Congratulations James, you are the man.

I stumbled upon this picture above here and it got me thinking, those novelty glasses were a pretty good idea. Unfortunately, the glasses makers only had a ten year run there. It’s kind of difficult to make glasses with the numbers 2010…unless you have one eye. Looks like we have to wait until the year 3000 to start making some new ones. BTW – If I’m alive then, I’m definitely going to buy a pair. I feel like I missed out on the last ten years by not buying any. (Note, it has come to my attention that those “smart glasses guys” might make a pair of glasses where the “1″ goes over the bridge of the nose and the two “0″s will go over the eyes. Those dudes are smart as a whip.)
- I saw this commercial yesterday on TV and I just had to link it. It is fantastic…my favorite part is when the guy comes out of nowhere and punts a guy who is proposing to his girlfriend like a football. If that last sentence didn’t make you click the link, then maybe if I told you that the commercial is for onlinebootycall.com it will do the trick.
- There are now two Steve McQueen bio pics in the works in Hollywood and Nic Cage is in talks to play him in one of them. (HA, just kidding about the Nic Cage part. But, I really wouldn’t be surprised if he did get offered. Sounds like his kind of movie.)
- This show looks terrible. What the hell is Comedy Central thinking on this one? A single-camera medieval spoof show is what people are clamoring for these days? I seriously doubt it.
- The season finale of Flight of the Conchords was last night and I must say, I thought it was fantastic. Overall, I thought the second season wasn’t nearly as good as the first season but still, better than most things that are out there on tv right now. I did really enjoy the musical sequences this year though…they were much more visually artstic than the first season and I really enjoyed that. You know, because I’m so artsy. Plus, Dave had a larger role in the show and you can never go wrong with more Dave. Never.
- And you know what else is growing on me? Eastbound & Down. Sure it’s crude, crass, and sexist, but Danny McBride and company delivered their best episode two weekends ago and I feel like it will only get better, just as long as the Kenny Powers character stays somewhat grounded in reality.
I spent all of last weekend transferring my iTunes catalog from my old computer to my new computer. It was a pain in the neck. I even started going thru some old cds and uploading them onto my new computer while I was at it. When I was thru it was like I had accomplished some sort of monumental feat, except that I was the only one that was impressed by it. I mean, I was focused like a finely tuned athlete…I was going to make it to the top of the mountain like Sir Edmond Hillary and Tenzig Norgay. I was going to transfer some damn music files as if my life depended on it. I just buried my head in that computer and went to town. You really should have seen me, it was a pretty incredible performance if I must say. Dare I say gutsy? I even broke out the bubbly on Sunday night when the last music file was transferred over to celebrate. Note – If I even applied half of that type of drive to my career, I think I probably would be doing more than answering phones. That’s kind of sad. Onto the Musings.
- Below is the trailer for the documentary Tyson. It looks really interesting.
- Looks like Mickey Rourke has finally signed on for a role in Iron Man 2.
- This little game, sort of a different take on Pac-Man is awesome to play…especially when one is at the office.
- Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel did a piece on former big league baseball player Lenny Dykstra and how he is this stock broker type guru. Well, GQ recently had an article about Dykstra and well, it was vastly different from the piece that ran on HBO.
- Lots of sports related entries today but I think you need to check out this youtube clip. If this is real, I mean, I don’t know, I just don’t know what to say. How the hell did they practice this? I literally spent fifteen minutes trying to slow down the video to figure out how she went thru that basket.
Straight out of the city of brotherly love, this talented young lady got her start in the industry as an A&R representative for Epic records. Quickly feeling the call of artistry and creation, she moved on to producing and song writing, penning tracks for Lily Allen, Ashlee Simpson and GZA (she even appeared on Revenge of the Liquid Swords). She’s often compared to M.I.A. as the two have a similar sound and a penchant for irregular beats and non-syncopated rhythms. Ever the renaissance woman, she spread her sound to all audiences opening for Coldplay, Kanye, The Beastie Boys, M.I.A., The Streets and Jay-Z. Please welcome to the spotlight Miss Santogold.
I thought about making a list of Irish themed movies but then I thought, who the hell wants to get drunk on St. Patrick’s day and watch a movie? You want to have a few shots of Irish Whiskey and drink 7-13 Guinnesses and sing along to some classic Irish songs with your friends. That’s what you want to do. But not all of us are well versed in Irish music and I include myself. Unfortunately, that still won’t stop me from putting together an Irish themed playlist that you can play on St. Patrick’s Day. And yes, this is probably a horrible and Americanized list but at least I’m open with it. (note, I know when John posts music, it’s nice and compact so I’m sorry about my big and blocky posts. I’m just not that good at interneting.)
The Pogues – Dirty Old Town
-play this one when your night is starting to slow down
The Cranberries – Zombie
-I don’t care what you say about The Cranberries, but these guys rock. Especially this song
Flogging Molly – If I Ever Leave This World Alive
The Waterboys – Fisherman’s Blues
-it’s in the movie Waking Ned Devine, check it out if you are yearning for a feel-good movie
Dropkick Murphy’s – I’m Shipping Up to Boston
-You probably are familiar with this song because it’s from The Departed.
Flogging Molly – Drunken Lullabies
-another Flogging Molly tune but this a bit more rockin’ than the other one.
Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova – Falling Slowly
-Ok, it’s from the movie Once. Maybe not something you play while you are out drinking with everyone but you should save this when you get home. And if you are alone, just pop this song on and if you’ve had a few, don’t be frightened if the tears start to come. It’s ok, trust me
The Waterboys – This is the Sea
-I was going to post another Pogues song, “A Pair of Brown Eyes” but I couldn’t find it on the website. So I posted this song instead.
So there you have it, my quick, half-assed guide to some Irish music for St. Patrick’s Day. I hope you like at least one of these songs.
