Mexico

I think of a movie. You try to guess it in the comments section. As always, the picture above is a clue. If nobody guesses it correctly, I’ll update the post with another hint. Good luck. And oh, just to help folks out, this movie is not a Western.

UPDATE: No correct guesses thus far. Hint: The two lead characters in this dark comedy really formed an unlikely bond in Mexico City.

UPDATE II: Sobchak has Guessed the Movie! The correct answer was The Matador, starring Pierce Brosnan (get it, “bond”) and Greg Kinnear. If you haven’t seen this movie, I highly recommend it. Pierce Brosnan gives a brilliant performance and Greg Kinnear plays the straight man like nobody else. Anyway, Sobchak, you are the big winner here. Please tell all your friends how you guessed the movie (for this week only). Thanks for playing everyone.

Bishop Allen The Champagne School

Can dudes from Harvard living in Brooklyn rock? Can they at least indie rock? They can. They can indeed. Featured here on PCC2C already as a group to jump start your spring playlist, Bishop Allen has also contributed to Nick and Norah’s Infinte Playlist as well as various commercials and sitcoms. They’ve obviously used their Harvard educations to fine tune a soft, more accessible brand of indie music for us all to enjoy. Pretention-free. I think. Either way they’ve actually been putting out music for about the last 6 years, so know that there is a lot more where this came from.

yogaclass1

I was framed last weekend. And I felt helpless. I was sitting in yoga class, sweating profusely from my bike ride over there, and just as class began, I breathed in this awful, rotten-egg like fart. It was just terrible. Terrible I tell you. So, I started to look around, you know, literally giving folks the “stink-eye”, trying to see if I could find the culprit. But as I looked around, I realized that within about a 40 foot radius, I was the only guy around. On top of that, I was the sweaty, didn’t brush my hair kind of guy that morning too. And it slowly dawned on me that those women that sat near me, they all thought it was me that farted. Because, I was the guy. And I was looking dishelved and grossly sweaty. It was the perfect crime for this lady…she knew that I would be blamed for the fart, and that’s why she let it rip. I’d like to get CSI to clear my name…or maybe Encyclopedia Brown, whomever isn’t busy.

- Kenny Powers is back. Eastbound & Down got picked up for a second season. I know it’s been discussed on here ad nauseum, but this show got much better as the season progressed and I for one am looking forward to the second season.

- Funny little video of Tracy Morgan on a newscast in Chicago.

- You’ve probably seen that enlightening reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians…and if you are like me, you probably said to yourself, “gee, I need some more Kardashian but minus the Kim part, she’s really dragging down the show.” Well, it looks like we are in luck. E! has picked up Kourtney and Khloe in Miami which will center around Khloe and Kourtney’s crazy adventures in Miami. Man, I’m ecastic. E!, you’ve got gold on your hands there, GOLD!

- The cast is starting to shape up in Steve Soderbergh’s film, Moneyball. Brad Pitt will play Billy Beane, the GM of the A’s and Demetri Martin (from the Colbert Report) will play Paul De Podesta, a Harvard grad who uses his stat skills to change baseball scouting tactics. I didn’t read the book but this movie does not interest me in the least bit. But, it’s got a good cast (note, David Justice and Lenny Dykstra have signed on to play themselves) but I don’t know, it’s just not pressing my buttons.

Good luck and Guess the Movie!

UPDATE: Holy Moly, that was fast as lighting. Ggill, you are this week’s Guess the Movie winner! Ggill’s answer was The Departed, the kick-ass Martin Scorsese film that won the Oscar for best picture a few years ago. My only complaint with that movie was the final scene where the rat ran across the ledge there…I could have lived without that shot…seemed a little heavy handed to me. Yes, I have made a total of zero films and this guy has made great movies for the last 4 decades so please take my criticism with a grain of salt. Anyway, ggill, you are the big winner this week so be sure to tell all of your friends how great you are at guessing the movie.

Florence and The Machine Island

Coming to you straight from England (again? again.), Florence Welch is one part Debbie Harry, one part Janis Jopin, and all parts budding British indie-rock goddess. Her machine, not to be confused with Zack Delarocha’s nemesis, is an ensemble of studio and touring musicians who provide the instrumental canvas for her powerful voice. Her first album, Lungs, will be released in July of 2009, so consider yourself forewarned. Dubbed as Britain’s next big thing, she’s won over the BBC, The Brit Awards and NME alike – all that’s left is the PCC2C masses…

Spring Mix

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Spring. It’s great. Nice weather, vacations, cold beer in the lazy afternoon, girls in sun dresses – there’s not a whole lot wrong with spring. It’s also the unofficial season of cranking out some sweet new tunes and making mix cds or brand new playlists. As your ever vigilant guide to hot jams, I have provided you the base, your starting point, for a kicking new spring mix. All tracks are pretty upbeat and should set the scene for your first beach trip of the season, your inaugural back yard grill fest, your initial session of skipping out of work after lunch to drink beers with a friend – I’ve got all your bases covered. Just add to it as you see fit – season to taste, so to speak -and you’re ready to go.

Note: the lack of pix and band detail is because some groups have already been featured here and some are future guests of The Spotlight.

I think of a movie. You try to guess it in the comments section. If nobody guesses it correctly, I’ll update the post with a clue. As always, the picture above is a clue. I’m also going to say that this one is difficult. Please note, that this movie has nothing to do with Green Day or really any type of music related movie.

Good luck and Guess the Movie!

UPDATE: Ok, lots of good guesses but still no correct answers. I knew this would be tough and it looks like the grenade in the picture has some people guessing it’s a war movie…and that would be wrong. The director of this comedy has a huge cult following. Unfortunately, not many folks saw this film in the theater three years ago, even though it had a pretty funny premise. Maybe it will turn into a classic on dvd, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time something like that happened to him.

UPDATE II: Congratulations Neal! You are this week’s winner of Guess the Movie! The correct answer was Idiocracy, the Mike Judge movie set in the future which portrays our society as really, really dumb. I saw this in the theater when it came out and I wasn’t that impressed but I feel like I should re-watch it again…maybe it’s funnier on a second viewing. Anyway, way to go Neal, be sure to tell all of your friends that you are a big winner (for this week only).

Upcoming Movies – ECH edition

Friday, April 10th, 2009

So Rhett laid down some sweet previews for a myriad of great movies coming out soon. However, let it be known that Rhett is not the only PCC2C host with great recommendations – I have some too. Now it is known. Without further ado, here comes the East Coast version of the spring/summer movie trailer bonanza. Bonanza – that’s just fun to say. Bonanza.

500 Days of Summer

I love Zooey Deschanel, I do. Always have. That’s why this movie, at least the trailer, speaks to me. Jospeh Gordon-Levitt plays the role of a guy who finds a girl and falls in love – however, the favor is not returned. I like the realistic aspect of that storyline. Unfortunately, that’s how life is a lot of the time, and 500 Days looks like it brings a tremendously creative and heartfelt perspective on the joys and agonies of being in love. Maybe that’s more of why it speaks to me than just Deschanel. Either way, count me in.

Inglorious Basterds

This is pretty much the ideal premise for a Tarantino movie: small group of U.S. soldiers remains behind enemy lines to impart their own personal brand of justice against the Nazis. Violent, dark yet intermittent moments of humor and absurdity add up to form the perfect Quentin cocktail. Plus add in the uncharacteristic performances from Brad Pitt and B.J. Novak (who I think is the most underrated cast member of The Office) and there’s no way I can resist.

GI Joe

When I was a kid GI Joe was my favorite cartoon and tied with Star Wars for my favorite toys to play with. Fast forward 20 years later and the prospect of a live action GI Joe movie, that looks surprisingly well done thus far, is bringing that excited ten year old right back to the surface. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (kind of his day today on the site) plays Cobra Commander, Dennis Quaid is General Hawk, and Sienna Miller is the Baroness. Marlon Wayans, Ray Park (Darth Maul) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko from Lost) round out other notable characters. Don’t tell me the clip above of Snake Eyes fighting Storm Shadow isn’t awesome. Because you’d be wrong. It is…

The Informers

Bret Easton Ellis is a crazy dude, but for whatever reason I like his stuff. In fact this is one of the first times, maybe the only time, where I’ve read the book before the movie comes out. That’s right – I feel so learned. Anyway, this book is similar to his others: 1980s, the decadence and consequence-free lives of the filthy rich, meaningless sex, drugs, parties, murders, pretty much just excess in every sense of the word. The heart of Ellis’ books lie in the distance and vapid existence in which his characters revel. The one thing about this trailer is that it doesn’t show any vampires. You read that correctly – the book had vampires. We’ll see what comes of that. Ellis is one of those guys where I’ll see any movie-version of his work. He’s just got it like that.

The Hangover

Rhett mentioned in a previous posting how a sequel is being made for this movie even though it’s not even out yet. After watching the trailer, I can say that I have no problems with that. Nothing fancy here, just a movie based on one of the time-honored comedy storylines: crazy stuff can happen when you go out to Vegas. Love the casting all the way around and, quite frankly, it just looks like a really funny movie. Mike Tyson jamming to Phil Collins? Where do I get my ticket?

Keep Your Eyes Peeled this Spring/Summer

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Have you seen the trailer to that Fireproof movie with Kirk Cameron on tv? Evidently, with a touch of a button, I could order Fireproof on paper-view and watch it in the luxury of my own home. But I’m not going to do that. Instead, I’m going to watch the following trailers below because I’d rather wait patiently for one of these movies, instead of seeing Fireproof with Kirk Cameron. And that’s no slight to Kirk. It’s more of a reflection of how awesomo (that’s a new word) the following films look. Maybe after I see these movies in the theater, I’ll get around to ol’ Fireproof. Or not maybe not.

OK, we’ve all heard the Christian Bale rant, but let’s put that aside for a second. This should have been the sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Unfortunately, we got Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Which I never even bothered to see. I’m hoping they get back to their roots and play some Guns ‘n Roses in Terminator Salvation. Opens May 21st.

This one is on everyone’s radar and that includes mine. Johnny Depp as John Dellinger, Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, and directed by Michael Mann…yup, it’s Public Enemies and I can’t wait for this one. Opens July 1st.

This isn’t the full trailer but this at least gives you a taste of Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie, Bruno. The velcro bit is priceless. Opens July 7th.

I’ve already linked this movie in a previous post but I’m that excited about it that I’m posting it again. It’s the documentary Tyson.

I wasn’t able to find the trailer with subtitles for Rudo y Cursi but I’ve included the version sans the subtitles. It has a very whimsical feel to it too which is pretty cool I think. And if you liked Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal in Y Tu Mama Tambien, then you might be interested in this upcoming flick that will be in limited release on May 8th. If you haven’t seen Y Tu Mama Tambien, make sure you don’t see that movie with another couple or with your parents. Just trust me on that one.
