Guess The Movie – Online Edition

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

It’s that time again: time to guess the movie. Last week’s edition proved to be very competitive and exciting (with Batey pulling off the double), let’s see if we can replicate it. Your first clue is the classic Monty Python sketch above. Sidenote: The Monty Python gang is currently celebrating their 40th year of awesomeness. Leave your guesses in the comments section, and I’ll update as needed. Represent…

Update: no correct guesses so far, although I knew someone would guess Bill & Ted – good try CC. I like your thought process, but I thought that would be a little too obvious. Anyway, your second clue is the clip above from the legendary film Monty Python and the
Holy Grail
. Good luck to you all…

Update: no correct guesses so far. Your final clue is the clip above (I apologize for the length, but there aren’t as many good Top Gun clips on You Tube as you might think) and this piece of guidance: each of the three main characters from this animated classic shares a name with someone in one of the three clips above. There you go. Who can put it all together?

Update: We have a winner! The correct answer was Disney’s The Sword in the Stone. The three main characters were Arthur (pretty obvious connection to the Holy Grail), Merlin (Tim Robbins in Top Gun) and Merlin’s owl friend Archimedes, named for the great Greek philosopher who apparently also theorized about the merits of scoring a goal during a soccer match. Congratulations to Neal for solving this week’s GTM. Be sure to tell everyone how great you are until next week when someone will surpass your greatness. Thanks to everyone for playing – see you next time.

Coming Soon

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

This is pretty simple – here are some trailers of movies coming out in the next couple of months that I think are going to be dope. That’s right, dope. So consider yourselves informed.

The Road Dimension 11/25/09

This is the first of two “end of the world, holy-hell the future sure does look bleak and crazy” movies coming out this winter movie season. In The Road, we have Viggo Mortensen wandering around with Charlize Theron trying to survive and not get murdered by the backwoods descendants of the Deliverance cast. He’s going head to head with Denzel to see who can be the baddest man alive in movies where not many men are left alive.

The Book of Eli Warner Brothers 1/15/10

Denzel is living it up post-apocalyptic style himself, only he’s got some kind of book that holds the keys to Man’s salvation. Throw in Mila Kunis and Gary Oldman and you’ve got yourself a nice little cast to head out and save our way of life. Hmmm. Viggo vs Denzel. Charlize vs Mila. Eli seems a bit more Mad Max which may give it the edge. Tough call to make between two films of our impending doom. Guess I’ll have to see both.

Gentlemen Broncos Fox Searchlight 10/30/09

Jared Hess brings you Jemaine Clement as a crazy science-fiction writer who is desperate for an idea. His plan is to steal a contest entry from a writing camp participant and submit it to his publisher. The story becomes a hit and hilarity ensues. That’s about all you need to know. Looks awesome.

New York, I Love You Vivendi Entertainment 10/16/09

Finally, we have New York, I Love You, which is a take-off, or maybe even the second chapter to, Paris Je T’Aime, which, if you haven’t seen, is fantastic. The premise is pretty simple: round up like 10-12 directors and have each one put together a love story set in New York that lasts roughly 10 minutes. The stories vary in terms of how old the characters are, the stage they’ve reached in their relationship, and some stories don’t always end in love. It’s a cool concept that worked beautifully the first time aorund in Paris, so I have every expectation it will work in the Big Apple.

Guess The Movie – Online Version

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Kablam! I’m back. Was the kablam too much? Wasn’t sure going in, but it felt right. Anyway, Rhett is still on sabatical writing his memoirs, so I’ve returned to the hosting chair for another edition of GTM Online. Went pretty well last time, so let’s see what happens.

As always, the picture above is the first clue, make guesses in the comments section, and I’ll update if no one gets it off of the pic alone. Word.

UPDATE: Alright – no correct guesses so far, so here’s your second clue: The song “Bow Down” by Westside Connection. If you’re not familiar with the song, that’s ok. Do a little digging, listen to the song, read about it and then put it all together. I’m making it a bit harder this time around – out of respect for you guys.

UPDATE: FINAL CLUE: Hales and Kirkham are close – especially Hales (right verse, wrong lyrics). This martial arts film is an 80s cult classic and even provided some good fortune for Janet Jackson’s first husband. Somebody bring it home.

UPDATE: We have a winner! Congratulations to Batey for solving this week’s Guess the Movie – Online Edition. The correct answer was the incredibly awesome The Last Dragon. That movie had it all – jheri curls, karate, the song Rhythm of the Night by DeBarge (featuring Janet Jacksons’ first husband), and one of the dopest movie bad guy’s of all time, Sho’ Nuff, who uttered the immortal words “Kiss my Converse” (referenced directly in the song Bow Down by Westside Connection). That’s two in a row for Batey so he’s definitely going to impress the ladies this weekend. Hope you all enjoyed playing and didn’t mind it being a little tougher this week. Tune in next week for another exciting edition of GTM-Online Edition, host TBD.

Kitty Daisy & Lewis Sunday Best

You ready for some old school sounds? Then get ready for North London’s Kitty Daisy & Lewis. The Durham kids (it’s their last name, not the city in NC) might by short on years lived (Kitty is only 16) but they have talent and charm to spare. Their whimsical sound harkens back to an amalgamation of 1920s, 1940s and 1950s musical styles with just enough contemporary polish to not sound outdated. As best I can tell, they’re a throw-back to awesomeness. They play an unbelievable array of instruments including xylophones, ukuleles, and the accordian. I was an instant fan after one listen and some of you who saw Coldplay on tour this year may have felt the same way as they were the opening act in select cities (one of which was Raleigh). If not, become a fan right now.

Guess the Movie – Guest Host

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

While Rhett is on sabatical I thought I might guest host his usual spot here on GTM-Online. While I will never be able to replace him, it is my hope that this little fix tides over you hard core GTM junkies until his return.

As always, the picture above is the first clue and make all guesses in the comments section. I’ll update with additional hints if no one nails it off of the sweet picture I provided. Dig it.

Update: Clue #2: While I like all the guesses (especially Batey’s and Brendan’s), and it just goes to show how many sweet movies Christopher Walken has been in, I wouldn’t make it so easy as to just put up a picture of one of the actors from the movie (read: Christopher Walken is not in this movie). However, this movie was nominated for four Academy Awards, but it only was able to take home one of the prized 8 1/2 pound award statues. I won’t give you the year – but I’ll say it was sometime during the 90s. Let’s see what you’ve got.

Update: we have a winner! The Correct answer was Dead Man Walking, the extremely well-crafted movie about repentence of sin starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn, and directed by Sarandon’s husband, Tim Robbins. Congratulations to Batey, this week’s winner of Guess the Movie – Online Edition. Be sure to tell your friends how great you are Batey, but only for this week. There’s an expiration date on greatness. Tune in next week for another installment – who will be your host? You’ll have wait to find out…

Grand Archives Sub Pop

Remember when pretty much every band came from Seattle? I mean, Seattle was really doing it there for a while. Then grunge faded out and crap rock unfortunately took over the airwaves. However, the Emerald City would not lay completely dormant all this time and recently spewed forth indie rock darlings Band of Horses (even though the band members are from Charleston and consider that to be “home”, the band actually formed in Seattle). Fomer Horses guitarist Mat Brooke eventually took his guitar, and his beard, and formed his own band and called it Archives. He then must have thought that name was not prominent enough, changed it to Grand Archives, and now my man Mat is making a name for himself. After playing some gigs out west with Modest Mouse – Mat & Co. released Keep in Mind Frankenstein just this past September. If you dig Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes and melodic indie rock in general, then you’ll be down with this. Respect.

More Video Games with Sports Icons

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Instead of Johnny Mac – we’ve got a new spot with Tyson. Mike Tyson – not Cicely Tyson or the good people of Tyson chicken.

Kind of testing the waters on updating you guys about video games – seems like a medium we don’t cover very often.
