Random Internet Stuff – Part I

August 5th, 2010

Some gems from the interweb. I mined them especially for you. Not you, you.

Random rant about badminton. It goes on for so long. What were the producers thinking during this and how weird would have been to be watching the Olympics and be subjected to this segement? More bizarre than hilarious.

Unbelievable bike tricks by the late Danny MacAskill
(thanks to PCC2C reader JB for the tip)

Update: looks like MacAskill is not dead. Curse you, internet rumors!

Part II coming tomorrow…

Lissie Columbia/Fat Possum

Her real name is Elizabeth Maurus and she appropriately calls Rock Island, Illinois home. She’s classified as a folk-rock artist, but I think that definition is way to confining. Having listened to several of her tracks I think she can play pretty much whatever she wants. She’s got a great voice, and easily shifts back and forth between belting out scathing rock lyrics and whispering quiet sentimental chouruses. Make no mistake, she’s the real deal. The video above is of her own single (found on her album Catching a Tiger that was released this past June), which is about as solid a pop-rock track as you’re going to hear, but if that doesn’t sell you, check out the selection of her covers below. She kills every single one of them. Her band is no joke either – one dude plays bass and drums at the same time. Respect…

Lady GaGa

Metallica

Kid Cudi

Thanks To David Lynch for the heads up.

Guess The Movie – Online Edition

August 2nd, 2010

Welcome back to another exciting installment of GTM-OE. I’m happy to be back guest-hosting while Rhett continues training to become a champion Muay Thai kickboxer. He has become the number one contender by ascending the ranks of the underground circuit, participating in “The Winner Is The One Who Isn’t Dead” matches in Bangkok and has a promising chance at becoming the undisputed Cruiser Weight Champion of the Mae Hong Son province. We’re all very excited. Your first clue is the picture above, leave guesses in the comments section and I’ll update as necessary. Good luck…

Update: we have a winner! (sort of). The correct answer was Rocky, however our winner, Hales, did admit to using Google to aid in his quest for the answer – discovering that Rocky’s turtles were indeed named Cuff and Link. There is no official rule prohibiting use of the internet, and I suspect it has been used in the past, so Hales will remain our winner for the week, but is subject to your complaints in the comments section. Be sure to tell all your friends how great you are Hales, but for this week only, since everyone now knows your dirty secret. And I’m not even talking about using Google to win GTM. You know what you did. Thanks to everyone for playing and I’ll see you back here next week.

Guess The Movie – Online Edition

July 27th, 2010

Welcome back to another exciting installment of GTM-OE. I’m happy to be back guest-hosting while Rhett continues his experimental testing of dream-entry technology. Oh, you thought Inception, was science fiction? Just keep telling yourself that next time you’re dreaming of a centerfold sandwich at the Playboy mansion and Rhett approaches you with a silenced handgun asking about some of your inner-most thoughts. I suggest just telling him what he wants to know, lest you wish to dream of unpleasant spinal realignments. The picture above is your first clue, leave your guesses in the comments section, and I’ll update as necessary. Good luck…

Update: no correct guesses so far, but Pretty in Pink was a good attempt. You guys are back on your game. Here’s your next clue:

Update II: we have a winner! The correct answer was White Men Can’t Jump where Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes have to play playground legends Duck and King for supremacy of the court and Harrelson has to hit an impossible long-range hook shot for Gloria to get on Jeopardy. Much to his chagrin, he has to shoot on the Sudan and not Ghana. Congratulations to this week’s winner, Paugh. be sure to tell your friends how cool you are, Paugh, but for this week only, since next week not being cool will be the new trend. Thus making it cool? Confusing. Thanks to everyone for playing and I’ll see you back here next week.

Late Night With Fallon

July 22nd, 2010

I’m telling you – you’re missing out on some good, original late night programming if you’re still writing off Jimmy Fallon over on NBC. I seriously think he’s doing a good job with the production and making that show his own. Here’s a great clip that explores what it’s like working for a late night talk show – and how the collaborative process over at LNWJF takes shape. Looks like a pretty sweet gig. Call me Fallon, I’m available for consultation.

Hooverphonic PIAS/Epic

Taking it back to the mid-nineties for some authentic Belgian electro-pop rock. I think that’s everyone’s favorite genre of music. I know, growing up, it was certainly mine. All this time you thought Belgians were just good for waffles and frites, but they’re so much more than that. Besides housing the European Union’s capital, they produced Hooverphonic. They’ve got a rich sound that experiments not only with electronica but also with heavy orchestra accompaniment that gives them a fuller, arena-venue style. Lead singer, Geike Arnaert, has a unique tone to her voice that makes them stand out, but they’re real succes is managing to avoid the cheese-factor in their lyrics and delivery that prevents so many European bands from being successful. If you need to know what I’m talking about, just listen to German sensation Tokio Hotel’s Unchained Dogs. Hooverphonic, better than waffles? Probably not, but give them a listen any way.

Guess The Movie – Online Edition

July 19th, 2010

Welcome back to another exciting episode of GTM-OE. I’m happy to be back guest-hosting while Rhett tours the Orient in search of the mysterious Jade Kimono Dragon. At first I thought he was just looking for a green kimono and I thought he might be dabbling in cross-dressing, but I was wrong. He’s searching for treasure. Possibly buried treasure. Rhett is Indiana Jones. The picture above is your first clue, leave guesses in the comments section and I’ll update as necessary. Good luck…

Update: we have a winner! The correct answer was City Slickers featuring everyone’s favorite calf Norman. Congratulations to the ever-wise Neal for only needing one clue to take it down. Double rainbows to you, sir. Be sure to tell all your friends how great you are Neal, but for this week only, because next week you might not be so great. Think about it. Thanks to everyone for playing and I’ll see you back here next week.
